Show Boat by Edna Ferber is a 1926 novel telling the story of three generations of performers on a floating theater, the Cotton Blossom. As the titled show boat travels down the Mississippi River from the 1880s to the 1920s, readers get a glimpse of a forgotten form of American entertainment. In that era, floating theaters stopped in river towns that normally didn’t have access to high quality performances because of their distance and isolation from major urban centers. As part of her research for writing Showboat, Ferber came south and joined the crew of the James Adams Floating Theatre on a 4-day voyage along the inland waterways of the North Carolina coast. She ultimately set the showboat part of her novel on the Mississippi River, but the James Adams Floating theatre was the showboat closest to her home in New York City and the only one that she ever visited. Show Boat is a 1951 American musical romantic comedy-drama film, based on the 1927 stage musical of the same name by Jerome Kern (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (script and lyrics), and the 1926 novel by Edna Ferber. It was made by MGM, adapted for the screen by John Lee Mahin, produced by Arthur Freed and directed by George Sidney.

Ferber grew up mostly in her native Kalamazoo, Michigan, and in Appleton, Wisconsin (in between her family moved to several Midwestern towns). The evolution of Show Boat from Edna Ferber's novel to a history-making Broadway play to its several film versions is among the most important milestones in 20th century U.S. culture. This was the first widely popular play (and/or motion picture) to depict African-American performers whose characters were as important as those of the white actors. YEAR GEORGE S.
